Partner Visa Evidence Checklist

Organise 820/801 or 309/100 relationship evidence around what it proves—not merely how many files you can upload.

Cover the four relationship evidence areas

A persuasive record shows how the relationship developed and operates across time. Quality, relevance and consistency matter more than repetition.

1

Financial aspects

Show how money, expenses, assets and liabilities are shared or managed.

  • Joint or individual bank records showing shared expenses
  • Rent, mortgage, utilities, insurance or major purchases
  • Transfers, beneficiary nominations and financial support
  • An explanation where finances remain partly separate
2

Nature of the household

Show where and how you live, including domestic responsibilities and care.

  • Lease, address records, mail and household bills
  • Division of cooking, cleaning and other responsibilities
  • Living arrangements during periods apart
  • Care of children, relatives, pets or shared property
3

Social aspects

Show that family, friends and the wider community know the relationship as genuine.

  • Events, travel, invitations and memberships
  • Selected photographs with dates, places and people
  • Communication with each other's family and friends
  • Specific supporting statements, including Form 888 where relevant
4

Nature of the commitment

Show mutual commitment, emotional support and plans for a shared future.

  • Relationship history and important milestones
  • Contact and visits during time apart
  • Knowledge of each other's circumstances
  • Future plans, wills, beneficiaries and long-term decisions

Build one evidence timeline

A timeline helps align the application forms, personal statements and supporting records. Contradictory dates can create unnecessary questions.

PeriodRelationship eventUseful evidenceWhat to explain

Documents for applicant and sponsor

Relationship evidence sits alongside separate identity, eligibility, sponsorship, health and character requirements.

  • Identity and status: passports, birth and civil-status records, Australian citizenship or permanent residence evidence for the sponsor.
  • Immigration history: current visa, previous applications, refusals, cancellations and travel history.
  • Sponsor information: sponsorship history, relevant character documents and required disclosures.
  • Family members: children, custody, consent, identity and dependency documents where applicable.

Common evidence problems

A large upload is not automatically a clear case. Review the story the documents tell.

  • Hundreds of repetitive screenshots but little evidence across the four areas.
  • Dates in forms, statements, addresses and travel records that do not match.
  • Unlabelled photographs with no date, location or explanation of who appears.
  • Periods living apart or separate finances left unexplained.
  • Generic personal statements or Form 888 declarations that do not reflect personal knowledge.

If the relationship has ended or become unsafe

Seek confidential advice before withdrawing an application or assuming it cannot continue. Circumstances involving children, a sponsor's death, or domestic and family violence may require different evidence and official notification.

Use the checklist as a strategy, not a guarantee

Every relationship and immigration history is different. A document can be useful in one case and misleading in another if its context is not explained.
