Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional Visa
A five-year provisional pathway for skilled applicants nominated by a state or territory or sponsored by an eligible relative, with regional living, work and study obligations.
491 visa at a glance
The Skilled Work Regional visa is provisional rather than immediately permanent. It can suit applicants using state or territory nomination or eligible-relative sponsorship who are prepared to live, work and study in designated regional Australia.
Subclass 491 applicants must also meet the relevant occupation, skills assessment, invitation, points and visa criteria.
Two ways to access the 491 pathway
The occupation options and evidence differ depending on who supports the application.
State or territory nomination
A jurisdiction nominates an applicant who meets its current occupation and applicant-category settings as well as the federal requirements.
Eligible-relative sponsorship
An eligible relative in a designated regional area may sponsor a qualifying applicant. The family relationship, sponsor status and residence evidence all need to be established.
Later subclass 191 pathway
An eligible 491 holder may later seek permanent residence through subclass 191 after satisfying the applicable regional and other requirements.
Regional planning is part of eligibility
The decision should be based on more than extra points. The applicant and accompanying family need a realistic plan for a designated regional area.
- Confirm the postcode or area is designated regional for the relevant purpose.
- Research genuine employment prospects and any state employment expectations.
- Plan housing, schooling, transport, health care and family settlement.
- Keep evidence of regional residence, work and study throughout the visa period.
- Understand the later subclass 191 requirements before relying on a permanent pathway.
