Before changing a course or education provider, check visa condition 8202, course level, transfer restrictions, Confirmation of Enrolment timing and visa validity.
A course change can affect more than enrolment
Provider processes, the National Code and Student visa conditions overlap. The safest order is to review the proposed change before cancelling the current CoE.
- Compare the Australian Qualifications Framework level of the current and proposed courses.
- Check visa condition 8202 and any other conditions shown in VEVO or the grant letter.
- Confirm whether a provider release is required during the transfer restriction period.
- Review CoE dates, course gaps, visa expiry and whether a new Student visa is required.
Review the change in the right order
Do not assume that receiving a new offer means the visa position is resolved.
Compare levels
Confirm the current and proposed AQF level and whether the new course is a non-AQF award.
Check transfer rules
Ask the current provider about release requirements if the principal course has not reached six months.
Protect the timeline
Coordinate the new CoE, course gap, OSHC and any new visa application before cancelling enrolment.

Can a Student visa holder change courses in Australia?

Do I need a new Student visa for a lower-level course?
Home Affairs states that a student who wants to change to a lower Australian Qualifications Framework level or a non-AQF course must apply for and be granted a new Student visa before changing.
