One study plan, two separate decisions

Course admission is decided by the education provider. A Student visa is decided by Home Affairs. The course logic and visa evidence should still tell one consistent story.

Start with a registered course

CRICOS is the Australian Government register of providers and courses available to people studying in Australia on Student visas.

  • Confirm the provider, course, location and CRICOS registration.
  • Check academic, English, work-experience and portfolio requirements.
  • Compare intake dates, course duration, fees and admission deadlines.
  • Evaluate the course for its educational and career value without relying on promises of work or permanent residence.

  • Most students can currently work up to 48 hours a fortnight while their course is in session, subject to their visa conditions.
  • The Genuine Student requirement applies to Student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024.

Frequently asked questions

Does course admission guarantee a Student visa?

No. A provider decides admission, while Home Affairs separately decides the visa application against subclass 500 requirements.

Do I need a Confirmation of Enrolment before applying?

Most applicants need a current Confirmation of Enrolment for each intended course when applying. Limited exceptions can apply, so check the official subclass 500 requirements.

Can I change to a lower-level course on my current visa?

A lower-level or non-AQF course change can require a new Student visa. Review the proposed course level and visa conditions before cancelling the current enrolment.

Can an education agent guarantee a job or permanent residence?

No. Course admission does not guarantee employment, a future visa or permanent residence. Any later migration pathway depends on the requirements in force at that time.
