Skilled 189, 190 or 491
Identify a nominated occupation, obtain the correct skills assessment, check English and points, then compare independent, state-nominated and regional options.
Explore skilled migrationBuild a realistic plan from study to a graduate, skilled, employer-sponsored, regional or independently eligible family pathway, with clear checkpoints before your Student visa expires.
A Student visa allows eligible study in Australia. Permanent residence requires a separate visa application with its own legal criteria, evidence and timing.
There is no automatic student-to-PR conversion. Completing an Australian course, living in Australia for several years or obtaining a 485 visa does not guarantee an invitation, nomination, employer sponsorship or permanent visa grant.
The right route depends on the qualification, occupation, age, English, work history, location, employer and family circumstances at the relevant application date.
| Route | Possible visa stages | Main questions | Permanent outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate then skilled | 500 to 485, then 189 or 190 | 485 eligibility, occupation, skills assessment, English, points and invitation or state nomination | 189 and 190 are permanent if granted |
| Points-tested regional | 500 or 485 to 491, then 191 | Occupation, skills assessment, points, eligible state or family sponsorship, invitation and regional obligations | 191 is the later permanent application if requirements are met |
| Employer-sponsored | 500 or 485 to 482 or 494; later 186 or 191 where eligible | Genuine skilled position, occupation, employer nomination, salary, work experience, skills and English | 186 is permanent; 191 may follow an eligible regional provisional route |
| Direct employer nomination | 500 or 485 to 186 Direct Entry where all criteria are met | Approved nomination, eligible occupation, age, skills assessment, employment evidence and English or applicable exemptions | 186 is permanent if granted |
| Partner or family | Relevant partner, child, parent or narrow other-family subclass | Genuine relationship, sponsor eligibility and the exact subclass requirements | Depends on the family subclass and stage |
These are pathway examples, not a prediction. A temporary or provisional stage has separate criteria and does not reserve a future permanent visa.
The Temporary Graduate visa may give an eligible graduate time to work, build evidence and prepare another visa. It is useful only when its own requirements and the later pathway are assessed separately.
Testing all relevant tracks is safer than assuming one course leads to one visa.
Identify a nominated occupation, obtain the correct skills assessment, check English and points, then compare independent, state-nominated and regional options.
Explore skilled migrationReview the role, occupation, employer, salary, experience, nomination stream and timing. A job offer alone is not an approved nomination or visa.
Explore employer visasCompare state or eligible-family sponsorship for 491 with regional employer sponsorship for 494, then understand the separate 191 permanent stage.
Read regional visa guideA genuine eligible relationship may create a separate pathway. Study in Australia neither creates nor replaces the relationship and sponsor requirements.
Read partner visa guideA course should make educational and career sense even if migration settings change. Migration planning then tests how that genuine career direction may fit current visa criteria.
Start early enough to change the plan lawfully if one route becomes unrealistic.
Protect Student visa compliance, build English, research occupation and assessing-authority rules, and retain course and employment records.
Check 485 eligibility, skills assessment steps, state criteria, employer prospects, passport validity and every relevant expiry date.
Lodge only a visa for which the requirements and evidence have been checked. Set work, English, points and nomination milestones.
Reassess progress and lawful options. An EOI, job search or future plan does not itself permit a person to remain in Australia.
A reliable review starts with dates and documents, not a course name alone.
Short answers to common planning questions. Individual eligibility still requires a facts-and-documents review.
No. The Student visa is temporary. A person must separately qualify for the relevant later visa and meet its requirements when applying.
Not always. A 485 can support some plans, but another skilled, employer-sponsored or family pathway may be available without it.
No. Migration criteria and demand can change, and a course does not guarantee a skills assessment, nomination, invitation or visa.
Depending on the facts, common options include 189, 190, 186 or a later 191 after an eligible regional provisional pathway. Family visas have separate criteria.
Ideally well before course completion, so there is time to test occupations, evidence, English, graduate eligibility and lawful next-visa timing.
Send your course, completion date, age, current visa, English, work history, occupation goal and preferred location for a structured review.
